In Naples, Italy, during the Middle Ages, a precursor to modern pizza known as “pizza bianca” (white pizza) emerged.      In 1889, legend has it that Neapolitan pizza maker Raffaele Esposito created a pizza for Queen Margherita of Savoy, using tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil to represent the colors of the Italian flag.
